The very first photograph was taken almost 200 years ago. However, its inventor could not have imagined the impact it would have on humanity within just a few decades.

The year 1839 is often cited as the official birth year of photography as an art form. At that time, the Frenchman Louis Daguerre published a method for capturing an image on a silver-coated copper plate. Daguerre named this method of fixing a photographic image after himself: Daguerreotype. In the same year, the French Academy of Sciences approved the name " photography" for the new invention. Incidentally, history has an interesting tendency to repeat itself. The first photographs from the middle of the 19th century were mainly portraits. There were good reasons for this. Back then, it was technically impossible to take a moving picture. The exposure time was several minutes to half an hour. To get a sharp portrait, the person's head was fixed with a special device. Otherwise, the face was blurred or a person could even have several heads. There are very few photographs of animals from this period, as it was difficult to get them to sit or stand.

Photographers who worked for glossy magazines such as The Rolling Stone, Vogue or even Tim enjoyed great popularity. Worth mentioning are the works of such unique photographers as Annie Leibovitz or Steve McCurry, who delighted the world with portraits of John Lennon or an Afghan girl. Later, technology and people's desire to portray themselves led to the emergence of the so-called selfie. But people have also photographed nature, cities, insects, rivers, bridges and much more. Most of the photos on earth are of the same kind of person: ordinary people who simply wanted to capture important moments in their lives - a photo with a friend or loved one, important family events, victories in competitions or simply a visit to an interesting place.

What is a photo album?

How and why did photo albums come about?

The history of photo albums began almost simultaneously with the invention of photography in the years 1830-1840. With the development of photography, it became easier for everyone to take photos. This created the need to store them in chronological order.

The first album was made famous by the Englishman William Henry Fox Talbot. He collected printed images of landscapes and architectural monuments in a book and recorded them. The book was called The Pencil of Nature. This first photo album quickly became popular. The idea appealed. Printers began to produce special photo books that were sold in stores.

In the middle of the 19th century, around 1854, photographs in the 11.4 x 6.4 cm format became popular. The photos were glued onto thick cardboard with slits to facilitate mounting. At this time, the production of photo books began in the form of thick cardboard albums with large sheets that could hold several printed cards. These captured moments were collected and shown to each other to add to the collection. Pictures of the royal family, politicians, sportsmen and actors were particularly popular.

A few years later, in 1860, a well-known Canadian newspaper published instructions on how to make photo albums. Housewives from wealthy circles took up the idea enthusiastically. They began to collect pictures and design the pages beautifully. As a result, almost every living room had a photo album, bound in leather with a mother-of-pearl cover or inlay. The wealthier a family was, the more elegant the album with the family photos was. It was also a status symbol for guests of the house.

Today, there are only a few people who still decorate such unique albums. However, this does not mean that photo albums have lost their significance. People still enjoy leafing through their family albums, whether they are old cardboard albums or plastic albums with transparent sleeves in various formats.
