Roll-up: What is it?

Roll-ups, also known as roll banners, have recently become a popular advertising medium. These robust and mobile advertising media are increasingly replacing other formats. Here I would like to introduce you to what a roll-up is, how it is used in advertising and what advantages it offers. Below you will also find real roll-up examples from our agency client projects.

The term "roll-up" is a loan translation of the English word "roll up". It means "to roll up", "to wind up", "to roll up". This term points directly to the main feature of the format. Roll-ups are stands with an integrated automatic roll-up mechanism. This allows the banner to be unfolded quickly and rolled up again in a single movement when your event is over, for example.

Roll-ups are transported in special bags that protect your motif from dirt and accidental damage. The bag is usually supplied together with the construction. However, it can also be purchased separately if the existing one has become unusable or lost for any reason.

The size of the roll-up banner

The standard size of a roll-up banner is 85 x 200 cm or 85 x 220 cm. This is the most common format as it takes up little space, is lightweight and allows you to place the advertising at eye level. Depending on the printing company, you will also find some variations with special sizes.

Here are some of the most common standard sizes:

  • 85 cm x 200 cm: This is a common size for standard roll ups, often used for events, presentations and trade shows.
  • 100 cm x 200 cm: A slightly wider version that offers more space for graphics and text and is therefore suitable for larger events.
  • 120 cm x 200 cm: This size offers even more space for presenting your message and is particularly useful if you are exhibiting at a large trade fair or exhibition.

Variants of the format

There are several standard variants of roll-ups:

  • The classic, single-sided version: The cheapest solution. The advertising image is only on one side of the banner. These models are lightweight and very mobile. They are well suited as a replacement for classic wall banners.
  • Double-sided roll-up displays: These are characterized by two rolling mechanisms that allow two posters to be displayed at the same time - one on each side of the stand. Suitable for displaying different images for different visitor flows (e.g. arrow directions for entry and exit).
  • The "drop" model or drop shape: Can be single or double sided. The main features are an improved design, removable chrome inserts on the sides that hide the rolling mechanism and a weighted base that makes the construction more stable. The term drop refers to the base of the roll-up, which has a drop shape.
  • Dynamic roll-up: Equipped with an electric motor that rotates the banner or film with the printed image. Formally, it is not quite a roll-up, but historically such a construction is assigned to this format.
  • Hanging roll-up: The construction is suspended from the ceiling, the advertising is pulled out of the housing and fixed for the desired time. Some models are equipped with an electric motor that enables the banner to be rolled up and down.

Each design fulfills its purpose and if you choose the right type of advertising, it performs its tasks very effectively. We have also designed and printed many roll-ups for our agency clients.   • Trade shows and markets: roll-ups are an ideal way to attract the attention of visitors at trade shows and markets. They can be used to showcase your company, products or services and maintain a consistent brand style.
  • Points of sale: In retail outlets, roll-ups can be used to draw customers' attention to promotions, discounts or new products. They can be placed in-store or at the entrance to attract the attention of passers-by.
  • Presentations and conferences: At presentations and conferences, roll-ups help to present your company or products professionally and effectively. They can be used as a backdrop to show key points of the presentation or to draw attendees' attention to your stand.
  • Open-air events: Roll-ups are ideal for use at open-air events such as festivals, concerts or sporting events. They can be used as an information medium for the event or as an advertising medium for sponsors and partners.
  • Corporate events: Roll-ups are often used at corporate events such as seminars, training courses or internal conferences. They can be used to present information about the company, the event program or sponsorship opportunities.
  • Advertising campaigns: Roll-ups can be integrated into advertising campaigns as part of a media mix. They can be used both indoors and outdoors to draw attention to your brand or products.

Outdoor roll-ups can only be used to a limited extent due to their susceptibility to wind. The construction cannot withstand strong gusts of wind. However, the roll-up banner can certainly be part of the decoration of an exhibition tent if it is set up inside or the stand is positioned in such a way that it remains protected and under observation.

Why are roll-up constructions so popular with customers?

The main reason for the popularity of the roll-up format is its versatility. It can literally be used in any area to attract people's attention and convey promotional information to them. But that's not the only advantage of roll-ups. Below you will find the other advantages listed:

  • Very quick set-up: It only takes a few minutes to assemble a roll-up. This is particularly helpful if you need to quickly place advertising materials in a new location. Dismantling also takes a maximum of five minutes.
  • Independence and autonomy of the construction: You don't need a wall to hang a banner and don't have to look for fastenings. The roll-up itself already serves as advertising material and as a stand for it.
  • Easy transportation: When you go to a trade fair or market, you worry more about samples and goods than advertising. Roll-ups take up very little space when folded and do not require any special handling. Simply place them together with the goods.
  • Automatic banner tension: Most structures are equipped with an automatic roll-up function that allows you not to worry about the tension of the advertising tape. Just pull it out and attach it, the mechanism will do the rest for you.
  • Relatively low price and possibility to change the poster when needed.

As you can see, roll-ups are a popular advertising format with great potential - for you too. Hopefully you now have an idea of why you might need this type of advertising.
